Freshman Fifteen

FRESHMAN FIFTEEN

Everyone is scared of college in their own ways, however most people do not know of the most horrific part of college, the Freshman Fifteen. No one thinks when they arrive at college they are going to gain some fifteen pounds during there first year of college. It is hard to believe, hard to contemplate, you could be an athlete, a runner, someone who goes to the gym four times a week. But once you step into that dorm, smell that air of freedom, and independence, everything will change. There are many ways to avoid these fifteen pounds and an eye opener from your girlfriend when she sees you for the first time in months.
The First step to take when avoiding the inevitable Freshman Fifteen is to workout as much as possible. According to Ezine Articles, most freshman gain weight due to the lack of exercise. If you are the average freshman, your playing videogames for hours at a time and during the time you are not playing, your eating. This process will go continue until your stomach has changed in size and shape. Working out is only good for your body and mind, but it is also a great way to use your excess energy. As well as sleep, another way to avoid pounds to your body. Most students get only so many hours of sleep, by not sleeping your causing your metabolism rate to drop, this means whatever you eat will be processed through your body much slower. Something as simple as exercising for 30 minutes, four times a week will help greatly.
Generally, at any college, the food is pretty bad, it is neither healthy for you nor good tasting. The food at Rowans Yella’s Grill and Deli is the type of food you want to eat maybe once a day, maybe. The food typically gets old for most students, there are only so many options that are both tasty and healthy. The CBS news states that in most cafeterias they are serving food that are high-fat foods and are typically not good for your body. Once you see the scale rising with every bite of Yella’s chocolate chip pancakes, you’ll become even more horrified. The key to keeping thin is to stay far away from these places or at least minimize how many times a week you go there. Instead of a pork roll with egg, and cheese, get a salad from the Salad Bar or even a healthy sandwich from the cafeteria.
Last and especially not least, the one aspect that gets them all, is the alcohol intake. Beer and liquor from Thursday to Sunday, if you’re a football fan, really kills your stomach. This is unhealthy on many levels, your gaining weight with every shot and every beer, no one realizes the caloric intake that alcohol takes on the body until they come to college. While you are at a frat party or with your friends drinking in your dorm, slowly but surely, pounds are being gained throughout your body. Eighteen years old and you have yourself a nice beer belly, hard to hear or believe, but it’s the truth. Medical news today states that if your are binge drinking four of the seven days of the week you are increasing the probability of weight gain by almost triple. You must calm down on the alcohol intake, keep the drinking to once maybe twice a week. According to sciencedaily.com, they say you should drink water in between beers, you will cut weight gain by half and still have a fun time. Drinking may cause weight to be gained, but it also may cause you to make ignorant decisions which may then lead to worse problems.
In conclusion, there are many forces causing the extreme gain weight in college. Take it day-by-day, workout, really try and sweat and burn calories, use up the extra energy that everyone has inside them. Get sleep every night, go to bed at a reasonable time to help your body digest, no more 2 am meals. Healthy eating is a huge factor, everyone must eat healthy, instead of BK or Taco Bell have a healthy snack. Lastly, the alcohol, by not drinking four times a week you are not only helping your body but you are greatly reducing your weight gain. Everyone can control their life and their body, college is the time to grab life by the horn and steer it in any direction you feel is necessary. By taking some of these facts and referring to them, you will decrease the probability of gaining the Freshman Fifteen, and increase the probability of having a great time at Rowan University.

  1. I didn't really experience the freshman fifteen 'cause I'm a guy, and I ran track, but it seems like you really have to make a CONSCIOUS effort not to gain that weight because the change in lifestyle from high school to college is so stark.
